If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.” – Sir Isaac Newton

To trace the history of our firm, we need to go back in time to the height of the Great Depression. On June 1, 1934, Ivan Clayton Harries and Gordon Albert Binkley opened a firm named Binkley & Harries from their offices on the 10th floor of the Excelsior Life Building at 36 Toronto Street, Toronto. Among their staff was a young law student named Elmore Houser.

Our Mission

Delivering legal solutions in plain English for long term success.

I have been with HH&S for over 35 years. The team is always available for excellent advice and legal expertise while I grew my business in Canada. They have assisted me in confidence and with the utmost of professionalism whether dealing with personal or business legal matters. I call them “my legal firm”.

(Julie Di Lorenzo – Client for Over 35 Years)

HH&S has helped us navigate successfully through the delicate and sometimes challenging process of ironing out a new shareholder’s agreement and achieving a positive outcome.

(Mark Coutts – Coutts Financial Services Inc.)

When we decided to update our partnership agreement to accommodate our future growth, we turned to HH&S. They understood our vision and our needs and crafted a secure, smart and comprehensive agreement.

Elmore Houser, Q.C.

Elmore Houser was born on March 11, 1912. He attended Victoria College at the University of Toronto and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Economics. In June,1936, he was called to the Bar of Ontario and remained with the firm. In September, 1944, Mr. Binkley left the firm to live in the United States. Mr. Houser became a partner, and the firm was renamed Binkley, Harries & Houser. In 1953, Mr. Houser was appointed Queen’s Counsel. Mr. Houser served on the Attorney General’s Committee dealing with legal aid in Ontario and the Attorney General’s Committee for the revision of the Division Courts Act.

He was also the President of York County Law Association in 1964. He worked on the redevelopment of the St. James Town neighbourhood in Toronto in the 1960s which at its time was the largest urban renewal project in Canada. He passed away in 2001. He was well remembered for his calm and reassuring manner and his practical approach to clients’ problems.

Robert W. Henry, Q.C.

Robert (Bob) Henry was born on December 22,1929. He spent his early years with this family in the USA, mostly near Catonsville, a suburb of Baltimore, Maryland. After his father passed away in April, 1942, he and his mother moved to live with her family near High Park in Toronto. Bob was awarded an academic scholarship to De La Salle College “Oaklands” and graduated from that college in 1948. He studied at the University of Toronto and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1952. Then he went to Osgoode Hall to study law. In June 1953, he started working as a law student at the firm which was then called Harries Houser. Its offices were on the 12th floor of the building at 80 Richmond Street West in downtown Toronto. Bob was called to the Ontario Bar in June,1956 and continued working for the firm. He was mentored by Mr. Houser with whom he worked for many years. He became a partner on January 1, 1957. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1971. He passed away on September 25, 2019. He was consulted by a broad range of clients in Canada and also in England, Germany and Finland. He was gifted with an ability to communicate difficult concepts in simple and straightforward language, and he was an excellent mentor for younger lawyers.

After he had passed, one of his clients reflected: “He was not just an excellent professional, but he acted as a true friend. During difficult times I have been sitting with him to listen to his fatherly advice. His calm and positive attitude even under difficult circumstances was encouraging. When I left his office, I felt better and motivated.”

Michael D. Syron, Q.C.

Michael (Mike) Syron was born in Manitoba but while he was still young, his family moved to Toronto. He attended Etobicoke Collegiate. Even as a young man, he was taller and bigger than any of his peers. He naturally excelled at football and played on his school’s team. After graduating from high school, he attended St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto. He then studied law at the University of Ottawa. He was called to the Bar in April, 1963. He joined the firm and became a partner on January 1, 1965. Michael was a dedicated community volunteer who contributed his time, energy and passion for people to many charitable causes and organizations. He was a founding member of The George Hull Centre for Children and Families and served as its Chairperson from its inception in 1985 until 1992. Michael was a man with a heart and sense of humour as big as his stature. There was nothing he enjoyed more (other, perhaps, than breaking down complex contracts for his clients using his variously coloured pens and markers) than engaging in healthy and respectful debate on various theological issues. Michael passed in November of 1995.

On November 1, 1985, our founders established a new firm of Houser Henry & Syron LLP which continues to be guided by their commitments to building long relationships with clients and to providing practical advice efficiently and in plain English.
